1. (i) What trees does Mr. Wonka mention? Which tree does he say lives the longest?

Ans: Mr. Wonka mentioned many trees: the Douglas fir, the oak tree, the cedar, and the bristlecone tree. Mr. Wonka said about the bristlecone tree that it lives longest than other trees.

(ii) How long does this tree live? Where can you find it?
Ans: The bristlecone tree lives around 4000 years and we can find that tree upon the slopes of wheeler peak in Nevada, USA.

2. How many of the oldest living things can you remember from Mr. Wonka’s list? (Don’t look back at the story!). Do you think all these things really exist, or are some of them purely imaginary?

Ans: Mr. Wonka made a list of the oldest living things, some of them are 4000 years old bristlecone tree, 168-year-old Russian farmer, 200-year-old tortoise, 207-year-old rat, etc. I think some of them existed but most of them are imaginary.

3. Why does Mr. Wonka collect items from the oldest things? Do you think this is the right way to begin his invention?

Ans: Mr. Wonka collects items from the oldest thing because he wants to do an invention that can make a person older by taking that invention. No, I don’t think this is the right way to begin an invention and it is a foolish way for any invention.

4. What happens to the volunteer who swallows four drops of the new invention? What is the name of the invention?

Ans: A 20-year-old young boy, named Oompa-Loompa volunteer for swallowing four drops of the invention. When he swallows the 4 drops of the new invention, he suddenly starts wrinkling and shivering all over the body. His hairs start to becomes grey and his teeth start falling off and he turns into a 75-year-old man. The name of the invention is Vita-Wonk.

1. (i) Make a list of the trees Mr Wonka mentions. Where do these trees grow? Try to find out from an encyclopaedia. Write a short paragraph about two or three of these trees. 

Ans: The trees mentioned by Mr Wonka are— Douglas Fir, oak, cedar and bristlecone pine. These trees mainly grow in the forests located in mountain regions with colder climates. Douglas fir is mainly found in Northwest America. This is named after famous botanist David Douglas who first described this species. The oak tree is found all over the world and its wood is used for making houses, furniture etc. Cedar trees are used also to build furniture and ships. Bristlecone pine is found all over America. This tree’s unique name comes from its prickly female cones. 

(ii) Name some large trees commonly found in your area. Find out something about them (How old are they? Who planted them? Do birds eat their fruit?), and write two or three sentences about each one of them. 

Ans: Some large trees found in my area are—mango tree, jackfruit tree, banyan tree, coconut tree etc.

Mango tree: In my area, many people have mango trees in their gardens. These are mainly planted to gain fruits. Birds and other animals such as monkeys, bats and squirrels often come to eat mango fruits during the fruiting season.

Jackfruit tree: In my locality, few people have jackfruit trees in their garden. Birds generally do not eat large fruits of this plant but bats prefer this fruit. 

Banyan tree: There is a very old and large banyan tree near the playground in our locality. No one knows who planted it and neither its actual age. Its small red coloured fruits are preferred by many birds.

Coconut tree: In my area, coconut trees are found in almost every house. They are planted to get fruits specifically by the homeowners. Its fruits are not eaten by other animals. Some birds through visits the flowers for nectar. 

2. Find out something interesting about age, or growing old, and write a paragraph about it. Following are a few topics, suggested as examples.
  • The age profile of a country’s population — does it have more young people than old people, or vice versa? What are the consequences of this?
  • How can we tell how old a tree, a horse, or a rock is?
  • What is the ‘life expectancy’ of various living things, and various populations (how long can they reasonably expect to live)?

Ans: The process of ageing starts as soon as the birth of a living being takes place. As we grow old, we see changes coming in us. Our country is the second most populous nation. India has a greater number of young people than old. This allows enhanced production as well as enrich earning capacity. This also increases the chance of a population boom around the corner. 

We can count the age of a tree using rings in its stem. A horse’s age is generally found from its teeth. A rock’s age can be found using the carbon dating process. 

The timeline from birth to death is the life span of an organism. The life expectancy varies from one organism to another. A mayfly lives only a day while a giant Olive Riddle tortoise may live for a few hundred years. Humans have an average life expectancy of 70-80 years.

NCERT Class 7 English Chapter 7 The Invention of Vita-Wonk is a very interesting story written by Roald Dahl. In fact, this story has been taken from the novel written by him “Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator”. This story starts with Mr. Willy Wonk, he is an inventor and when Mr. Willy Wonk invented Wonka Vita, which makes people younger. However, everything has a side-effect so Wonka Vite is so strong that it can even make people disappear because their age becomes negative. As a result of this invention, a person actually becomes minus 87, which means he has to wait for another 87 years before he can come back to life.


After this incident, to counter the effects of Wonka Vita, Mr. Willy Wonk decided to invent a drink that would make people grow older, so he travelled around the world in the great glass elevator to look for the oldest living things in the world. Firstly, he collected sap from the 4,000-year-old Bristlecone pine tree, then he took a toenail clipping from a 168-year-old Russian farmer. Then he collected the edd of a 200-year-old daughter and a tale of a 51-year-old horse. Then he took the whiskers of a 36-year-old cat and he also took a flea that lived on the cat, he took a tail of a giant 270-year-old rat and the black teeth of over 97-year-old Grimalkin, knucklebones of a 700-year-old cat Alou. After collecting all these he mixed them all and boiled them, which turned like a black liquid and he tested it on a 20-year-old person, then the person became a 75-year-old person, this means Mr. Wonka successfully invented a drink to make people grow old instantly.
